Upon arrival at the port of Skala, Patmos’ most popular tourist area, you'll immediately be charmed by its picturesque beauty. Patmos is worth a visit for many reasons, and if it’s your first visit, you’ll likely want to return to explore more. The island is known for its breathtaking landscapes, including pristine beaches and scenic trekking routes. As well as visiting the key highlights, enjoy walking through the whitewashed village, relaxing in a traditional tavern, and exploring quaint local shops for unique souvenirs.
Patmos offers a relaxed nightlife scene, particularly in Skala, where you can enjoy a laid-back evening at a lounge café by the port or visit clubs that stay open until the early hours. If you prefer a quieter evening, enjoy a long dinner in one of the island's many traditional tavernas.
The capital of Patmos, Chora, is a traditional settlement built around the impressive Monastery of Saint John the Theologian. The monastery, dating back to the 12th century, dominates the town, offering a glimpse into the island's religious heritage.
Patmos is internationally known as the “Island of the Apocalypse,” as it is where Saint John wrote the Book of Revelation. The island offers the perfect mix of natural beauty and spiritual history. With its narrow streets, old chapels, and white-washed houses, Patmos invites you to explore its hidden gems. It is also a perfect destination for a relaxing day trip, where you can enjoy some of the best value excursions in Didim. Patmos is ideal for families, offering a blend of historical sites, beautiful beaches, and local culture.
Patmos' history is intertwined with myth and legend. According to ancient mythology, the island was originally named Litois, in honor of the Goddess Artemis. Legend tells that the island sank into the sea, but with the help of Apollo, Artemis persuaded Zeus to bring it back to the surface, and the island was named Litois as a sign of devotion.
To enter Patmos, it's crucial to use the same travel document (passport or ID card) with which you entered Turkey. If you show a different document, the border guard will not allow you to leave Turkey for Patmos or any other Greek Island.
